Throw a Boss Virtual Party!

Different times call for different measures.  When a global pandemic prohibits you from rubbing elbows and breaking bread in close proximity it's time to get creative.  Use the resources you have at your disposal.  Combine all of the elements of a good party and figure out how to make them virtual.  A good party usually has a nice venue or space, pretty decorations, good food, cocktails, music, theme, entertainment and a purpose.

The purpose of your party is usually what draws attention and interest to your event.  Celebrations make for an awesome purpose for a good shindig.  You have a baby shower to celebrate an addition to your family.  You have a bridal shower to celebrate a bride to be.  Birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, promotions, retirements, political events, etc. are all really good reasons to start planning a party.  How do you take the all of those traditionally face to face events and make them virtual with the same excitement and enthusiasm?  It will take some creativity and you'll have to be tech savvy but it's absolutely possible.

So let's go down the checklist of good party elements and give the virtual option.

Venue

Normally you would search for a party space that has the capacity and specifications to accommodate your needs.  Virtually, there's no need to accommodate for space.  The most you will have to do is set up a camera, lighting and a computer to stream and record or have video capability.  If you're really fancy, you will make the area that people can see on camera look nice with theme appropriate backdrops.

Decorations

All you will need for a virtual party is to have the area that is visible decorated with items that go along with your theme.

Food

It's virtual, but it's still a party!!  Good food is a must.  The advantage now is that you only have to prepare enough for the people that are in your personal space.  Food presentation and pictures are totally necessary. You will generate excitement and that culinary visual will encourage your virtual guest to chef up a party menu as well.

Cocktails

NO PARTY IS COMPLETE WITHOUT COCKTAILS!!!!  While promoting my virtual voter registration party, it was the picture I posted of the cocktail on social media that gave me the best response!  Pick a cocktail that is not only pretty and has really good ingredients but also goes along with your theme.  Making the cocktail live with your guest is a great party activity for you to do as a group and you have something to sip on throughout the party.

Music

Depending on the type of virtual party you are planning, music can either be the introduction to your party leading up to the entertainment or it can go continuously throughout the entire event to set the vibe.  Music, no matter how you incorporate it is a must.

Theme

Your theme will help you create your virtual invites and brand your event.  Giving as many visuals as possible is important for engagement and to spark interest from potential party goers.  People have really short attention spans. If you have a clear theme and execute it well, they will know exactly what type of party you're throwing at first glance.  Your theme can be carried out through every element of your party planning and at the actual virtual party.

Entertainment

Your entertainment and purpose may go hand in hand.  Virtually you are a bit limited in your ability to entertain but you are able to do anything that can be shown on video or streamed for people to see.  Throughout the pandemic we have seen comedy shows, concerts and even conventions done virtually.  It's definitely different from going in person but when you really think about it, you save a lot of money because you get the same content for little or nothing and the cost you would have associated with your hair , outfit and transportation can now go into your savings account of making your home feel like you're actually there.  When providing entertainment, you can show music videos or look up your favorite comedian on YouTube for an at home comedy show.  It will take some clever coordinating and timing but your guest will appreciate you going the extra mile.

Purpose

Why are you throwing this party?  What would you like the end result to be?  Is it for entertainment?  Is it to raise money?   Is it to raise awareness?  Is it to promote a business or a special cause?  Your purpose should be the center of your event and it should be clear in all of your advertising and promotion.  If your purpose is one that your community or target group share an interest in, you won't have any problem generating a substantial guest list.
